The RAF ASU (Aeromedical Staging Unit) is a medical holding facility, operating on or in the vicinity of an Air Port of Disembarkation (APOD). It provides a holding facility for patients entering the AE chain and provides a central reception hub for tactical evacuation from multiple theatre locations and strategic evacuation out of theatre. The RAF ASU provides reception, administration, ground transportation, feeding and appropriate medical care for patients entering or leaving the AE system. The structure, organisation and size of the RAF ASU will be mission dependent. Co-located with Role 1 (Air), the RAF ASU forms an integral part of the Operational Patient Care Pathway (OPCP). Exercise Vigorous Warrior 2026 (VW26) is NATO’s premier multinational medical field training event, co-organised by the Estonian Defence Forces and the NATO Centre of Excellence for Military Medicine (MILMED COE, Budapest). It took place from 8–20 June 2026 in Estonia, VW26 gathered approximately 2,500 medical personnel from 29 NATO Allied and Partner nations to test and improve medical readiness, resilience, and interoperability in a complex multinational environment. Held on NATO’s eastern flank, VW26 demonstrates Allied preparedness to sustain medical support in the event of large-scale combat operations, including Article 5 scenarios. The exercise featured integrated civil-military cooperation, with participating civilian hospitals and health officials conducting joint operations alongside military medics. Vigorous Warrior also provides a platform for Allied nations to adopt and field-test innovative medical solutions, converting lessons into deployable capabilities. VW26 is a strategic demonstration of NATO’s unity and medical agility in the face of real-world threats. It ensures that NATO forces are ready to deliver life-saving medical support rapidly wherever and whenever required.
